Hiking and customs in the Sierra de Espadán

Enjoy a weekend in the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park, a mountainous natural area full of ravines and valleys, the perfect setting for hiking, discovering agricultural landscapes, picking mushrooms and tasting the best local products of the area.

Itinerary

Higueras – Pavías – Torralba del Pinar – Ayódar – Villamalur – Sueras – Tales – Vall de Almonacid 

What to visit and what to do

  • Walk through the fields of cherry trees that surround Villamallur in spring, taste the area’s prized cherries and sample typical products such as jams and marmalades.
  • Visit the villages of Higueras, Pavías and Torralba del Pinar to discover their traditions and agricultural architecture, such as old ovens and mills.
  • Walk along some of the trails offered by the Sierra de Espadán to collect mushrooms, with milk-cap or saffron milk-cap being some of the most abundant and appreciated varieties.
  • Take the Pozo Negro excursion in Fuentes de Ayódar and eat a typical local menu with grilled meat, stews and oil from the Sierra de Espadán mountain range as the main ingredients.
  • Learn about the tradition of the shawm in Tales, visit its Ethnological Museum to soak up the culture of the area and visit the Espadán-Mijares Tourist Info, where they will advise you on trails, mushroom areas and local gastronomy.
  • Descend to the foothills of the Sierra de Espadán to visit the Almonecir Valley, where the banks of the river are dotted with fruit trees such as cherry trees, and walk along the slopes of the mountains full of terraced olive groves.
  • Buy oil from the Espadán mountain variety at the Vall de Almonacid Cooperative and visit the remains of the Almonecir Castle, a Muslim settlement that takes us back to the time of the Christian conquest.
